Network Security
This specialised field of computer networking involves securing a computer network infrastructure. It is typically handled by a network administrator or system administrator who implements the security policy, network software and hardware needed to protect the network and the resources accessed through the network from unauthorised access. It also ensures that employees have adequate access to resources.
A network security system typically relies on layers of protection and consists of multiple components including networking monitoring and security software in addition to hardware and appliances. All components work together to increase the overall security of the computer network.
Without proper management and security, people can gain access to networks and retrieve information, modify settings or cause a network to fail. There are numerous ways a 'hacker' can attack a network.
Network Speed
The rate at which data is transferred on a network depends on the network's bandwidth, often expressed in Megabits per second (Mbps).
It's logical to assume a Wi-Fi connection rated at 54 Mbps is capable of transferring a file of size 54 megabits in one second. In practice, most types of network connections, including Wi-Fi and Ethernet, do not perform anywhere close to their rated bandwidth (the data rate supported by a network connection or interface).
As well as the file data itself, networks also must support features like control messages, packet headers and occasional data retransmissions, each of which can consumes significant bandwidth.
